Chakka (Jack Fruit) Vevichathu

Chakka Vevichathu of Chakka Puzhukku is a common recipe in Kerala prepared with raw jack fruit flesh (pacha chakka chula). It contains lots of fibre and good for health.

Chakka Vevichathu


Raw Jack Fruit Flesh (Chakka Chula) Chopped: 4 Cups

Grated Coconut: 1.5 Cup

Turmric Powder: ¼ tsp

Cumin Powder: ¼ tsp

Green Chilly: 2 nos

Garlic Cloves (small): 3 nos

Curry Leaves: 1 leaf

Dried Chilly: 1 or 2 (for seasoning)

Mustard Seeds:

Coconut Oil: 2 tbsp

Salt: as required


1. Chop jack fruit flesh (Chakka Chula) into small thin pieces

2. Grind coconut, garlic, green chilly, turmeric powder and cumin powder

3. Add salt, little water and cook the chopped chakka chula in a covered vessel

4. When it is cooked, put the grinded mixture on top of the cooked chakka chula and cover it with the lid

5. Keep the vessel again in a low flame for few minutes so that the grinded mixture get cooked

6. Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds add curry leaves and dried chilly (if needed for seasoning)

7. Add this seasoning on the mixture

8. Mash the mixture well with a cleaned strong stick or with handle of a wooden (or steel) ladle when it is hot

9. Your Chakka Vevichathu is ready to serve with fish curry or achar or sammathi
